Protective home sweep
494 U.S. 325 (1990)
Quick Rule
During a lawful in-home arrest, officers may check immediately adjoining spaces where an attack could originate. A wider sweep requires articulable facts suggesting a dangerous person is present.
Field Reminder
Check only spaces where a person could hide; keep the sweep brief and tied to safety.
Important Limits
A sweep does not create authority to enter the home or permit rummaging for evidence. The broader sweep needs independent safety facts.
