Protective vehicle weapons search
463 U.S. 1032 (1983)
Quick Rule
Specific facts supporting reasonable suspicion that a person is dangerous and may gain immediate control of weapons can justify a limited passenger-compartment weapons search.
Field Reminder
Limit the search to places a weapon could be hidden and explain possible access.
Important Limits
Being outside the vehicle does not automatically eliminate access, but a traffic stop alone does not authorize this search. It is not a general evidence search.
