Deadly force against fleeing suspects
471 U.S. 1 (1985)
Quick Rule
Deadly force cannot be used solely to stop escape. It requires necessity to prevent escape and probable cause of a significant threat of death or serious injury to the officer or others.
Field Reminder
Document the threat and necessity; give a warning when feasible.
Important Limits
A fleeing felony suspect is not automatically a deadly-force threat. Apply the encounter's facts, current law, and agency restrictions.
